How they work
Every rate and threshold used by these calculators is held in a single tax data layer, organised by tax year and taken from HMRC and GOV.UK publications. When a new tax year starts, the rates are updated in one place rather than being buried in each tool.
The calculation engines are separate from the on-screen forms and are covered by automated tests, including checks at each statutory threshold — a pound below, at, and a pound above.
Income Tax calculations use the rates that apply in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish taxpayers are warned rather than given a figure that does not apply to them.
