The UK tax year at a glance

5 April
End of the UK tax year for individuals and sole traders.
31 May
Deadline to give employees their P60 for the previous tax year.
6 July
Deadline for filing P11D forms for taxable benefits.
31 July
Second payment on account for Self Assessment is due.
5 October
Deadline to register for Self Assessment for the previous tax year.
31 October
Paper Self Assessment tax return deadline.
30 December
Deadline to file online if you want tax collected through your tax code.
31 January
Online Self Assessment deadline, balancing payment and first payment on account.

Company deadlines depend on your own year end: accounts are normally due at Companies House nine months after the year end, and Corporation Tax is payable nine months and one day after it.

Checklist

Records worth keeping

  • Sales invoices and receipts, in date order or digitised
  • Purchase invoices and expense receipts, including small cash items
  • Bank and credit card statements for every business account
  • Loan, lease and hire purchase agreements
  • Payroll records, including starter and leaver paperwork
  • Mileage logs where vehicle costs are claimed
  • Stock counts at the year end, if you hold stock
  • Correspondence from HMRC and Companies House

Records generally need to be kept for six years, and longer where an enquiry is open.
