Every mainstream package handles bank feeds, invoicing, VAT and Making Tax Digital. Choosing between them is about fit rather than features.
Xero
Strong all-rounder with the widest ecosystem of add-ons, good multi-user handling and reliable bank feeds. Suits most limited companies, particularly those needing project tracking, inventory add-ons or payroll integration.
QuickBooks
Competitive on price, capable, and strong on mobile. A sensible choice for smaller businesses and sole traders, with good Self Assessment features for the self-employed.
FreeAgent
Designed around freelancers and contractors, with a clean tax timeline. Often available at no cost with certain business bank accounts, which makes it very attractive for a single-director company.
Sage
Long established and familiar to many bookkeepers, with strong stock and manufacturing functionality in the higher tiers. Frequently the right answer where inventory or established processes matter.
How to choose
- How do you invoice — on site, in batches, or through a platform?
- Do you need job or project costing?
- Do you carry stock?
- Do you need payroll in the same system?
- What does your accountant support properly?
- What does it integrate with — merchant services, marketplaces, CIS tools?
The setup matters more than the brand
A well-configured chart of accounts, working bank feeds, correct VAT codes and sensible tracking categories make more difference than the choice of package. Most of the complaints we hear about software are actually complaints about setup.
